Zen Studios has been doing some excellent work with Pinball FX and the various tables added to the game. With the addition of Pacific Rim Pinball, a game based on director Guillermo del Toro’s movie that paid tribute to Kaiju and Tokusatsu works, the game has gained an interesting new table. We have already had tables based on the Monsterverse, so it makes sense, but the table has some unique elements that made it stand out.

Pacific Rim Pinball sees you pull off objectives based on the movie, so you will be making neural connections for piloting Jaegers, battling the monster and so on. You will need to find multiple secrets to close a Breach and also navigate surprising areas. But how does the play work?

Well, the table is okay, and appropriately fast-paced like you would expect from a table based on an action film. This would be okay, except the physics feel slightly off, at least when playing the game on Nintendo Switch. Zen Studios has been working to make the Switch version of Pinball FX a better game, but the wonky physics due cause some issues with how fast-paced the game can be.

This is not a game breaker like it would have been when Pinball FX first launched on the Switch, when the physics were extremely bad, but it does make an impact when trying to accomplish some of the missions. It takes a bit of time to adjust to, because it feels like the game has a bit of lag as well, but this can be overcome with patience.

I love how the table adapts many aspects of the film, and feels authentic. The use of the Jaegers and the movie’s music gives an excellent aesthetic feel and the missions in the table make excellent use of the license, so there are good aspects as well. I think if the physics could be fixed on the Nintendo Switch version of the game, this would end up being one of my favourite tables.

There is just so much intensity, and creativity here, and seeing it held back by physics issues and lag is a bit upsetting. Everything on the table feels well thought out and fans of the film will have a lot to enjoy. As mentioned, the music on the table is exceptional, and the table is also a visual feast that satisfies.

So what is the verdict? Well, I have to say that this is overall a good table and since Zen Studios is working on the physics issues for the Switch version of Pinball FX in general, I have faith that this table will be fixed eventually. I think it is worth checking out, but be aware that the table has some issues on the Switch right now. From what I understand, the issues are not present on the other platforms, so overall I think this is a table worth getting, just be sure what platform you choose to get the table on at this time.
