FreakZone Games is known for unique licensed games, often based on unexpected older IP. One of these was Manos The Hands of Fate, and now the attention has been turned to the classic stage show, The Rocky Horror Show ( not the movie, the Rocky Horror Picture Show to be clear), and the result is rather interesting. Like previous works such as Manos, and the AVGN games, this is a platformer, but handled in an unexpected way.

The game incorporates the musical segments of the Rocky Horror Show in various ways, such as setting stage music to progress, but also by turning the musical numbers into boss fights. This actually works rather well for the most part, although quite a few scenarios require some experimenting to figure out what to do. In fact, trial and error is a key part of the game, as some of the platforming sections will go into full on punishment mode, depending on the character you are controlling, and it is only the fact that the game has unlimited continues that will keep you going.

This is not a bad thing, as FreakZone is known for making challenging games, but be aware that some sections will require a lot of time and patience. You will control a variety of characters from the show and go through a number of iconic scenes, but in between there will be FreakZone’s usual challenging platform designs. Think of this as a platformer with heavy influences from Castlevania and Super Mario Bros 2, and you will start to understand. There is a large element of puzzle solving here as well,  but these should not be too much of an issue, for the most part, but does open the game up to more replays.

Some parts of the game cannot be accessed right away and will require more playthroughs in order to see everything. This is good because the game itself is rather on the short side and that may be off putting at first, before you remember this is a game that encourages replaying, something that FreakZone frequently does. With that in mind, the length becomes more acceptable.

There are some frustrating sections to be sure, this is a FreakZone Games production after all, but that does not take away from the overall experience. The game may be infuriating in some sections, especially when playing as certain characters, but it never feels like the game is mocking you. Rather, it feels like you are being guided slowly on how to get better and taught how you can figure things out on your own in a way you can appreciate.

The recreation of the iconic music is so well done here, and as mentioned, it is often tied to the actual gameplay segments in integral ways. This makes sense, considering how interactive The Rocky Horror Show is supposed to be with the audiences, and so I have to tip my hat there. The throwback visuals are handled well, and although some sections and characters shine more than others, it overall creates a good experience.

I have to say that the rocky horror show game, may not have been what I expected, but was an overall satisfying experience and I game I would gladly suggest more play. If you like The Rocky Horror Show or throwback platformers, then this is one for you.
