Every so often KEMCO surprises us with the games it releases and Metro Quester is an example of this, being an interesting throwback to an older style of RPG. There is a minimalist art style in this post-apocalyptic world created by Manga artist Kazushi Hagiwara, and a strong focus on exploration and discovery. The world was destroyed by a pandemic and natural disasters followed by monsters coming out of the ground destroying society as we know it and leaving the survivors scrounging to survive.

Humans must now explore ruins and try to find whatever they can to help them, but there is no reward without risk and there is danger everywhere. You must explore dungeons, where in this system and collect a minimum amount of food within 10 days along with various other resources in order to survive. As you continue on in the game, and gain more companions, the amount you must find will increase and this results in a need for planning and strategy in order to survive.

As an old-school style dungeon crawler, there are a variety of classes for your characters and each will be familiar to fans of the genre. The classes will also tie into the resources you find and recover as well as the weapons and must be considered very carefully. For instance, the healer in this game will of course use the medicinal items and combat-focused classes use weapons, but both need to keep careful track of their supply and even be willing to sacrifice some for better chances of survival.

Different classes will be able to make use of different recovered resources and you may be surprised at what can be found. But be aware the supply is limited so every fight is a life-or-death situation in a way. This is especially true because not only is combat intense, but difficult enemies start showing up almost right away.

Metro Quester is not a game for those looking to have an easy time and it will challenge you at every step. You must restore your recovered resources for example and that can cost you, on top of the characters needing the right skill to do the restoration. You quickly discover there is a pattern of grinding and exploration, but the combat will keep you on your toes from the start and you must learn how to use debuffs against enemies if you are to survive.

Honestly, I was surprised by Metro Quester and what I played. I knew it was going to be a throwback to earlier computer dungeon crawlers, but it captures the feel of the classic CRPGs so well. The minimalist visuals, tense atmosphere and strategic gameplay all feel right, and while this game is targeting a niche audience, it knows that audience well. Fighting against some of the bosses really tested me in terms of how fast I could think of new solutions and keep on top of things and I died more times than I care to admit, but I was hooked on the game.

This title is a labour of love from the developers and they knew exactly what they were going for with this game. If you are a fan of those classic CRPGs, then this is a game you absolutely need to try this one. Fans of newer and more modern games may be a bit taken aback and intimidated, but I urge you to give it a try as well, so you will get to experience this kind of game and see why it was so popular.
