When playing Justice Ninja Casey, the first thing that comes to mind is how similar it is to other classic beat em up RPGs such as those found in the Kunio series, while also having things in common with the Goemon series as well. This may sound like I am saying Sunsoft did not give Justice Ninja Casey a unique identity, but that is not the case at all. Rather, the game combines the best of both series into something special.
For the most part, Justice Ninja Casey is a note for note conversion of the original, and all the action has been preserved. Combat is handled well here, and the RPG elements are well incorporated, with our hero gaining new abilities through progression and leveling up, but techniques and items can also be obtained Kunio-kun style. It is a fun combat system, but admittedly some sections at the start may throw people off.
The game has a quest mode, with the RPG mechanics, or an arcade mode for those who want a traditional style of brawler as well. Both are good in their own way, but the quest mode will be very appealing to those who want something akin to River City Ransom but with a touch of Goemon. Just be aware that there is some issues with getting lost in the open world and having a problem of where do I go next, which can be frustrating.
One thing that is amazing about this new release of Justice Ninja Casey is that among the new inclusions Ratalaika added, was online play to the local co-op mod allowing players to go online to take on the challenge together. Of course, there are also the other Ratalaika additions, such as an excellent rewind feature, various quality of life improvements, and a nice selection of cheats to choose from. You can also Switch between the original Japanese release and the new translation, and there is a nice amount of bonus material included that can be viewed anytime.
Justice Ninja Casey is an old school game and that does mean some of the issues from the original game are still present, but for the most part, they are not a problem. Slowdown and flickering never gets in the way of the game, and the cheats help if you ever feel overwhelmed. The online play also makes the overall experience more inviting as well.
Ratalaika did a fantastic job with Justice Ninja Casey, and the end result is a game that can be easily enjoyed now, and not just by fans of retro games. Justice Ninja Casey has a fresh feeling along with its familiarity and that is the best we could ask for. At long last a classic is widely available, and we can all enjoy it in full.
