The wait to return to the tunnels of the METRO series finally has an end in sight. 4A Games has announced that METRO 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, bringing the next chapter of the post-apocalyptic shooter to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC simultaneously.
The release date was revealed during the latest PlayStation State of Play, which also delivered the first substantial look at METRO 2039 running on console hardware. The gameplay footage was captured on PlayStation 5 Pro and showcases the game running at 4K and 60FPS with ray tracing, offering an early glimpse at just how far 4A Games has pushed its technology since METRO Exodus launched in 2019.
At launch, a Performance Mode featuring 4K resolution, 60FPS gameplay, and ray tracing will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X. 4A Games says additional information regarding the game’s technical specifications and graphical modes will be revealed closer to release.
The new footage puts the focus on The Stranger as they make their way through a ruined apartment complex in post-apocalyptic Moscow. Rather than simply offering another cinematic glimpse at the game, the trailer provides a much better look at how METRO 2039 will actually play, including its combat, environments, lighting, and overall atmosphere.
And atmosphere remains one of the series’ biggest strengths. The latest gameplay shows a Moscow that has become an even more hostile place, with decaying buildings and claustrophobic interiors creating plenty of opportunities for the series’ trademark tension. The environments also demonstrate the considerable visual upgrade offered by the latest version of the 4A Engine.
That visual presentation has already earned METRO 2039 some attention ahead of its release. The game recently won the “Best Visuals” award at gamescom and received the most award nominations of any game at the event, making the latest State of Play footage particularly well timed.
While METRO 2039 is still several months away, the combination of detailed environments, ray-traced lighting, and 60FPS gameplay suggests that 4A Games is aiming to make the most of the current generation of hardware. The developer has yet to reveal the complete range of visual options that will be available, however, so there is still plenty more to learn about how the game will perform across different platforms.
For players looking to get reacquainted with the series before METRO 2039 arrives, METRO Exodus is also now available through the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog. The previous entry remains one of the most ambitious installments in the franchise, blending survival horror elements, first-person shooting, exploration, and a post-apocalyptic narrative across a variety of environments.
METRO 2039 is currently available to wishlist on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, with pre-orders expected to open later this year. A Collector’s Edition is also planned, with players able to register their interest for the edition, which includes a wearable replica Spartan Helmet.
Developed by 4A Games teams in Ukraine and Malta, METRO 2039 continues a franchise that has maintained a strong connection to its Ukrainian development roots. The studio says it remains committed to supporting its team members and homeland in Ukraine while development on the game continues.
METRO 2039 is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Some territories, including parts of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, will receive the game on February 5.
