Mario Kart is hands down Nintendo’s biggest selling series, and while Nintendo has plenty of other big name titles, nothing has the same selling power as Mario Kart, and the latest sales numbers prove it.

According to Nintendo’s latest financial report, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 61.97 million units worldwide, far outselling all other games on the Switch with no chance of a major contender to that crown anytime soon, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling and regularly tops the top 10 and 20 monthly software sales charts worldwide, but that is not what is significant.

The number Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold is impressive in a way you may not expect, since during its entire run on the market, the combined sales of the NES and Famicom reached 61.91 million units worldwide. At  61.97 million units sold, that means Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a single game, has sold more units than Nintendo’s breakthrough home console.

How Nintendo can ever top this remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see them try,
