A homebrewer from Brazil named Fabrice Fernandez who also goes by “Genesis 8:14” on YouTube is currently  working on a port of Irem’s 1988 arcade game Vigilante for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. For those who may not heard of Vigilante before it is the spiritual sequel to Kung Fu Master or Kung Fu which NES fans know the game best as. Vigilante is very similar to Kung Fu Master only this time you are in NYC instead of a Chinese tower. Your girlfriend Madonna has been kidnapped by the dreaded Skinheads gang. Like in Kung Fu Master you walk only left and right punching and kicking down thugs that try to choke you along with knife and chain welding maniacs and mobsters with guns. Unlike Kung Fu Master you can pick up nunchaku that not only increases the range of your attacks you can deflect gun shots as well. Each boss has a weak point to exploit. They don’t go down easily until you find their weak spots. There are 5 stages in total. Back in 1989 the  game was only ported home to Sega Master System and Turbo Grafx-16.

Here is a screenshot and video of the game’s progress. I will follow up for future updates of this awesome project. So far there is no music yet but the graphics and loud sound effects are pretty much arcade accurate! The loud thuds were missing in the Turbo Grafx-16 version. Also it looks like you can switch between the MD or PCE color palettes. Pretty cool.
