A game that always caught my attention was 3D Dot Game Heroes, a game that From Software made as a voxel-based take on the classic Legend of Zelda format. It was something so unique and yet remained a one off game with no follow up. There was not even a game like it from other developers, until now that is.

Fable of Fairy Stones is the first voxel-base take on The Legend of Zelda since 3D Dot Game Heroes, and pushes that style even further. The animation is a bit more robust, but it does not mess with the attacks and the physics are true to both the classic Zelda games and 3D Dot Game Heroes. What is different here, is that Fable of Fairy Stones has fleshed out the gameplay in some interesting ways.

Fable of Fairy Stones leans far more into the RPG aspect, with quests and side quests and deeper mechanics to get players more involved. There are smaller guild quests alongside the main game, but also a sense of exploration that feels inspired by the newer Zelda games as much as the classic ones. Combat, as mentioned, is still accurate to the frame-limited classic era, but feels far more refined and with more possibilities that gives a satisfying feel.

The dungeons and overworld of Fable of Fairy Stones are beautifully depicted, and the music is also handled extremely well. Given that this is a spiritual successor to 3D Dot Game Heroes, it was important that Fable of Fairy Stones not falter in that department and the developers succeeded, but there is a bit more here. Fable of Fairy Stones manages to do even more with the presentation style without losing anything in the process. The world feels realized, and there is so much to do  that fans of the classic games will enjoy.

Fable of Fairy Stones is a great action RPG but what makes it stand out is not just that it is a great spiritual sequel to 3D Dot Game Heroes, but that it understood what made that game work and how to expand on it. The RPG mechanics and quests are a great addition, and the advancements in the visuals and audio make everything shine . With fun puzzles to solve and interesting story elements lightly sprinkled about, Fable of Fairy Stones has a lot for games to enjoy. If you have been wanting some kind of follow up to 3D Dot Game Heroes, then Fable of Fairy Stones is something you need to check out. It understands how to balance old and new well, and is just plain fun.  This is definitely one to check out.
