With a recent demo to try out, Biomorph definitely has a lot going for it. This is not a long demo and starts you off with some abilities already, but it does give you a very good idea of what to expect here. The Kirby-esque mechanics, the Soulslike gameplay and the unique gameplay environments all shine brightly and the animations of the characters are nothing short of amazing, especially with how the character looks when dashing.
The combat in Biomorph has a lot of potential, but the demo only gives a brief glimpse of what we can expect, yet still manages to be satisfying. This is a hard game, but the demo has placed you in a situation where you will not be overwhelmed and can attack easily and dodge to get a feel of things, while still having a challenge. It is a tasty appetizer that manages to get you excited for the main game, and the music also really helps set the mood just right.
Biomorph’s main mechanic is the ability to become the other monsters and these are certainly unique transformations, showing a very creative touch and out-there design that fits the game well. To transform, you must scan corpses and replicate them and they control extremely well, and are animated perfectly. There had been an attempt by Nintendo themselves at a Kirby Metroidvania before ( and it is now playable on Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass), but it had some issues holding it back at the time. Biomorph looks to have taken that concept and refined it, making things work much better here and properly making the transformations the key to your progression in the game, which works exceptionally well for a Metroidvania.
After finishing the demo, I wanted more and that is the best thing I can say about a game demo. I want to see how creative the game can be with the monster abilities, I want to learn more about the world of the game and I want to see how far the developers can take things. There is so much to enjoy here, including how the game also takes some influence from Rayman by having the character wield gauntlets that are seemingly separate from his body, but in this case, they also talk and shapeshift, again giving the game a unique feeling.
Biomorph is one to keep an eye on for sure and has shown so much promise. I am excited for the full release based on this short demo and feel it has the potential to be one of the best Metroidvanias in years when it finally releases. Check out the demo now on PC for yourself to see what you have to look forward to.
The Biomorph Demo is available on Steam, with the game expected for full release on Steam and Nintendo Switch in the near future.
