Dawn of the Monsters is an interesting sidescrolling beat ’em up that makes use of the Kaiju genre. It was not perfect, but was still extremely satisfying and the cast of characters, and unique story all made the game stand out, and there were some great gameplay mechanics. Now new DLC has come and it changes things up in a good way.

The new Arcade Edition DLC Pack for Dawn of the Monsters brings in a new arcade mode, as well as a new playable character, along with around 50 new character skins as well as some extra Gallery and Archive files. There was actually a vote for who the new character would be, and while my choice did not win the vote, the winner is rather interesting, being a gargantuan robot made from multiple robots joined together.

This new character, Meteor Temujin, is clearly inspired by Power Rangers and the Megazord, and if you were a fan of that franchise, you will instantly love this character. Meteor Temujin is a mech piloted by a team who work together, much like in Power Rangers/Super Sentai, but this does not actually affect the gameplay. Meteor Temujin does have a unique move set though and it is awesome.

Meteor Temujin is a character whose style is based around using multiple weapons to be able to attack enemies. This is a fun character who offers a lot to the gameplay, but it leaves one wondering what the other characters would have played like. Meteor Temujin can of course be played in the main campaign, but the main campaign is no longer the only game in town (That was a terrible pun, I’ll get my coat.)

Arcade mode is what its name implies, removing the story elements and letting you just play the game in pure classic arcade beat ”em up fashion. Well, sort of. While there are 11 stages to play through, you can choose an upgrade at the end of each stage to change up the gameplay as you continue, and these can be fixed or randomized. It adds a nice touch to the gameplay, kind of like a roguelike, and it helps that there are multiple difficulties available as well.

Dawn of the Monsters may not be the best beat em up, but it is still an excellent one, and this new Arcade Edition DLC just makes it better. It is also worth noting that a free update came along with the DLC that brings new gameplay trials, more New Game+ modes as well as Japanese voice and text options, so even those who do not get the DLC have a reason to check out the game again as well. Overall, 13AM games did a great job here and this is very much worth checking out.
