File this under stuff we never saw coming. Tattoo Assassins, an infamous Mortal Kombat clone created by Data East Pinball is coming back.

Tattoo Assassins was data East’s attempt at a digitized one-on-one fighter, and had a story penned by Back to the Future co-scriptwriter Bob Gale. The game claimed to have over two thousand different fatalities, which was a massive exaggeration. as well as “nudalities” that stripped your opponent.  There were fatalities that included a DeLorean running over your rival and references to BurgerTime and other Data East games.

The game was given a very tight deadline of nine months, and then Data East Pinball (now Stern pinball) was sold to Sega, and while the game’s rom was leaked, it was unfinished.. Tattoo Assassins has developed a reputation over the years, especially since the game is full of bugs and glitches, although playable. Well, exA-Arcadia has announced that it has worked with the rights holders to Data East’s games to bring the project back to life using the original source code. The game will be finished and rebalanced, along with bug fixes and new content and will run a high resolution for modern-day screens, include scanline filters, low input lag and more.

It will be very interesting to see what comes of this project.
