The fan game ClayFighter Resculpted is going through changes. Tropical Turtles Entertainment recently received messages from Interplay’s legal department where the publisher raised an issue about the team “using the ClayFighter name and representations of their characters without permission.” Interplay has since hit the developers officially with a C&D meaning the project as it was, is not going forward. Tropical Turtles Entertainment is not done just yet, however, and has revealed that is it retooling the fangame into a new wholly original property.

ClayFighter Resculpted first started development this year and was intended to act as a revival of the ClayFighter series, a  fighting game series that had its last entry back in 1998. The game was being made in Unity with the Universal Fighting Game engine and there were plans to feature an art style inspired by the claymation of the original games.

In a message on its Discord and on Twitter, ClayFighter ReSculpted developer Windindi shared the following update:

“I have made a major decision regarding our future, as I am complying with the C&D given to me by Interplay. However, after seeking much praise, attention, and recommendations from all of you, I have decided to continue developing a original fighting game separate from the fan concept prior, but keeping certain elements inspired by the original project. I can understand if this upsets some of you, but it is the course of action I feel is appropriate for myself and everyone who were looking forward to what I had to offer. I hope you are still looking forward to what we make, and I ask that you stay tuned! It’ll be a while, but I hope you stick around for what we have to offer. With much love and thanks.”

While it is disappointing that we will not see any more of Clayfighter, it is exciting to see what the future holds for the new game, especially as a possible spiritual sequel to that classic series.
