Grant Morrison is bringing their distinctive storytelling to the world of 007 with a new James Bond comic series from IDW Publishing, developed in partnership with Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. Titled Sunbreaker, the opening six-part adventure promises a fresh take on the legendary British spy, complete with new gadgets, unfamiliar enemies, and a formidable new villain.
Morrison, known for their influential work across the comic book industry, says the opportunity to write James Bond was too good to pass up. A longtime fan of the character, they aim to deliver a definitive Bond story that captures the elements readers love while pushing the spy into unfamiliar territory.
Described as a world of intrigue, violence, double-crosses, and deception, Sunbreaker will present a setting that resembles our own reality reflected through a deadly funhouse mirror. Bond will face the greatest challenge of his life as he contends with a new ultimate villain inspired by real-world headlines, with the promise of fresh cars, gadgets, and the high-stakes espionage that has defined the franchise for decades.
Ian Fleming Publications Managing Director Amanda Douglas expressed excitement about the partnership, praising IDW’s respect for Fleming’s creation and its ambition for the future of Bond comics. Publishing Director Simon Ward also highlighted the unique opportunities the comic book medium offers, noting that some Bond adventures can only be told through comics.
IDW CEO Davidi Jonas added that the publisher intends to do more than simply produce supplementary stories for an established franchise. Instead, the goal is to take creative risks while preserving the qualities that have made James Bond endure, bringing the character into the modern comic book landscape.
First introduced in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale, James Bond has since become one of popular culture’s most recognizable spies, with a legacy spanning novels, films, video games, and comics. Morrison’s Sunbreaker will mark a new chapter in that history, although further details about the series and IDW’s other upcoming Bond comics remain classified for now.
