Marvelous and Vanillaware have announced that Muramasa: Revenant Blades will launch for PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam on February 4, 2027.
The side-scrolling action RPG brings together Muramasa: The Demon Blade and its Genroku Legends stories, while adding new gameplay systems and enhanced features. Players will follow six protagonists across a fantastical version of historical Japan, with each character offering their own story, abilities, and approach to combat.
In North America, the standard edition will cost $49.99 on PlayStation 5 and Switch, while the Switch 2 version will cost $59.99 and include the full game on the card. A limited edition will also be available for $89.99 on PlayStation 5 and Switch and $99.99 on Switch 2. It includes the game, a collectible art book, a limited soundtrack CD featuring select tracks, and a 10-by-14-inch folding byobu screen. Digital edition details will be announced at a later date.
In Europe, the standard edition will cost €49.99 / £44.99 across all platforms, while the limited edition will cost €69.99 / £59.99 and include the game and a collectible art book.
The six playable protagonists are Kisuke, Momohime, Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki, with players able to decide which story they experience first. Each character also has their own combat style. Kisuke and Momohime wield normal and long blades and can learn 108 secret arts, while Okoi can switch between her human and cat forms. Gonbe fights with a hoe, bamboo spear, and sickle, Arashimaru specializes in long-range ninja weapons, and Rajaki can transform into powerful oni forms.
Combat is built around fast-paced sword fighting, with players able to chain attacks together with jumps, dashes, blocks, and deflections. Weapons have a spirit gauge that can eventually cause them to break, encouraging players to switch between weapons during battle. Sheathing a weapon allows its spirit to recover, including after it has broken.
Secret arts add another layer to the combat system, providing everything from powerful close-range attacks to ranged techniques. Using them consumes spirit, which can be recovered by landing normal attacks, allowing players to mix basic attacks and secret arts together to maintain their momentum.
Kisuke and Momohime can further customize their fighting styles by learning new secret arts and assigning them to ground and aerial combat. These abilities can also be enhanced to increase their power, while the other characters have their own training systems and charms that can improve their stats and equipment.
Blacksmithing is another key part of progression. Kisuke and Momohime can forge new swords using souls collected from defeated enemies before strengthening them with additional resources. Charms can similarly enhance the abilities and weapons of the other characters.
There will also be plenty to do away from combat. Players can visit hot springs to restore vitality and gain special benefits, prepare meals using recipes and ingredients, travel between destinations by palanquin, and take boat rides along the coast while fishing. Those looking for a little more danger may even encounter giant sea monsters during their travels.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades will also include new gallery features, allowing players to browse illustrations, revisit previous scenes through flashbacks, and review dialogue in the script. More content will become available as the adventure progresses.
For longtime fans, a Reminisce mode will offer enhanced versions of the original Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Genroku Legends, providing another way to revisit the earlier adventures with updated visuals.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades will launch for PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam on February 4, 2027.
