The NEOGEO AES+ will no longer launch this year, with PLAION REPLAI announcing a substantial delay that will push the retro gaming system’s worldwide release to September 16, 2027. The company says the extra time will allow it to increase manufacturing capacity, secure components and expand the platform’s lineup of games.
Originally planned for a November 2026 release, the NEOGEO AES+ has attracted considerably more interest than PLAION REPLAI anticipated following its announcement earlier this year. Rather than launch with limited availability, the company has opted to delay the system while working to produce enough units to meet demand from customers and retailers around the world.
The revised release date is now Thursday, September 16, 2027. Existing pre-orders will remain valid and retain their priority in the production queue, with customers not required to take any action. PLAION REPLAI also says there will be no price increase as a result of the delay.
The company is additionally using the extra development time to expand the NEOGEO AES+ software roadmap. Ten launch titles have already been announced, while PLAION REPLAI is now in discussions with additional licensors about bringing more games to the platform.
According to PLAION REPLAI Commercial Director Ben Jones, the response to the NEOGEO AES+ has exceeded even the company’s most optimistic expectations. While the company explored options to maintain its original launch window, component shortages, particularly around memory chips, made a November release with severely limited availability increasingly impractical.
The delay will also come with an incentive for early adopters. Every console produced as part of the launch production run will include a Founding Supporter Bonus, which will not be offered with future manufacturing runs.
Customers who purchase a Standard or Anniversary Edition console from the launch production run will receive a free NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad. Those purchasing the Ultimate Edition will instead receive a 30% discount voucher that can be used toward any NEOGEO AES+ game available through the PLAION REPLAI website. Since the Ultimate Edition already includes the complete launch lineup, the voucher can also be saved for a future game release.
The NEOGEO AES+ Ultimate Edition will continue to be offered as a limited-production collector’s edition. Existing Ultimate Edition pre-orders remain secure, while the remaining allocation will continue to be available while supplies last.
PLAION REPLAI says the next major showcase for the system will take place at Tokyo Game Show 2026. Attendees will have an opportunity to try the hardware and learn more about the expanding software lineup.
For now, the NEOGEO AES+ has traded its planned 2026 launch for a much later arrival. PLAION REPLAI says the additional time is intended to ensure the system can launch with substantially greater availability while laying the groundwork for a larger library beyond its initial 10 games.
