With the recent release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, fans have shown a desire for more remakes in this style and they are not alone.Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the remake has expressed a strong interest in giving Final Fantasy VI the same remake treatment. Hayasaka was asked in an interview with Inverse about the game he most wanted to game he’d like to see receive the remake treatment and noted that Final Fantasy VI is his top choice. He also revealed that Final Fantasy VI was used as a reference point for the first Octopath Traveler and so it would be things coming full circle.
“It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy VI. Octopath Traveler – the first HD-2D title – was developed while referencing FFVI, as it had the highest quality pixel art. I would love to see how the game we referenced would look with the HD-2D art style.
Because this art style itself was created while referencing such titles, it’s highly compatible with games originally made using pixel art. This compatibility is probably why people feel this style is a match made in heaven with these types of remakes.”
