8 Bit Adventures 2 is a title that I had heard many things about but never tried when it was first released on Steam. I had not played the first game and had other games I wanted to play, but when given the chance to play 8 Bit Adventures 2 on Switch for a review, something made me decide I needed to play it and I am glad that I did. Even without having played the first game, the excellent storytelling helped me get invested in the returning characters and developing story arc and I found an experience second to none.

8 Bit Adventures 2 is a fantastic old-school role playing game that takes the best of what made the classics work and presents them in fresh and inventive ways. With a well thought out blend of sci-fi and fantasy and new protagonists that were instantly engaging, 8 Bit Adventures 2 has something here, especially with how its visuals and music feel both true to the classic era and still manage to put a new spin on things.

There is a good mixture of character classes, fantastical monsters with ever-growing cast of characters going through a series of beautifully designed dungeons and towns full of people with quests, as well as all sorts of magic and monsters to contend with. I mentioned this before, but the writing is extremely well done here, with the developers knowing how to balance being cheesy and making a well designed story and cast of characters that will draw you in. Even if you never played the original game, like was the case with me, you will still be able to enjoy the experience and the gameplay will draw you in.

Combat is handled well here, being turn based, but with its own take on magic points and attack points, and how the characters are rotated in and out of the battle. The character class variety is well handled and each class has their own special ability to stand out. In addition, there are Limit Break-style chargeable mega attacks as well and certain combinations of characters can actually cause specific abilities to emerge or improve.  Given that there are so many characters to use and choose from, this means that combat will not get sale as you play, and you will constantly have ways to keep things fresh.

Speaking of the combat, the game does not use random encounters like many classic RPGs did, but instead you will see the enemies on the overworld. While enemies will try and rush to you when they spot you, you can avoid some of these battles if you move correctly. Think of it as a mix of Pokemon and Earthbound and you will get the idea of how things work.

The dungeons in 8 Bit Adventures 2 are well handled, if a bit linear, and there are constantly secrets to be found and challenges to be had. You also will not need to worry about saving as you can save anywhere thanks to a character accompanying you who goes by Save Point, who will record your progress. In addition, Save Point will give you some good advice from time to time including suggestions for tactics when in battles, and occasionally some sarcastic gags. It is another wonderful and rather original touch.

8-Bit Adventures 2 is a game by RPG fans for RPG fans, the kind that grew up on the classics like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. What makes this stand out is out the developers made something unique from the experience that has a modern feel as well while paying tribute to what came before. This is an ideal RPG experience, and one I will wholeheartedly recommend.
